Josivac |
When Josivac
wound up their set at the Rosemount in May 2004 it was an
important stage in the band’s career. It was their last show for
six months as guitarist Simon Bartlett was travelling to the US
for a working holiday. With a decent turnout that night and their
debut album recorded, they were taking a well-earned break after
two years of solid gigging. Forward six months to Simon’s return
and the band regroups to resume their career. The gap gave the
five band members a chance to see...

Found: Quantity Of
Sheep |
Revelation Film Festival. Luna Cinema. Thursday July 7th.
550 people turn up and slink down into comfy seats. Dim the
lights. Action. For the next thirty minutes they are assaulted
with ten films from ten different Perth film makers who have made
“film tracks” to the electronic manipulations and traditional
sounds of f:qs, found:quantity of sheep’s second release, a CD/DVD
package entitled monkey + valve. There’s a monkey at a typewriter.
Red rivers of blood. Guy Hamilton Howlett from The Tigers in sepia
tones... more |

adamsaidgalore |
With three great albums ‘Domino Comfort’ (1997), ‘Driver Is Red’
(2001), and ‘Of Lost Roads’ (2002), adamsaidgalore are viewed in
some Perth circles as the most seminal band of the last few
years. How remiss of Groove not to have featured them. I finally
spoke with the legend in his own “out to lunch” time Andrew Ryan
in a booth at the Hyde Park Hotel on a late August Tuesday
evening.
What’s happening in the world of asg? “Well we’re touring in three
weeks. Matt Blackman from Purplene invited us over. Basically they
recorded their last CD...

The Panda Band |
What a year it has been. That’s one statement you could use to
describe the past twelve months for The Panda Band. Not intending
to create more hype here, but it’s a fair call to say that this
little entity are by far one of the most talked about bands in the
local scene. When Groove took time out to chat to TPB’s creator,
vocalist/guitarist Damian Crosbie, the band were in the process of
organising another support slot, this time with Evermore. Although
one of the most extensive tours the band have yet undertaken...

Lake Of Bass |
When you listen to ‘Coincidence Control’, Lake of Bass’s second
album, the first thing that strikes you is the fusion of styles
covering everything from jazz, funk, Latin and roots, all under an
electronic guise. The second is the interesting lyrics. It’s
certainly an original album so I was curious to chat to Tim
McNamara, responsible for the poetry, voice and music production
on the album. Diego Bosco, the other half of Lake of Bass, who Tim
describes as an amazing guitarist and masterful producer, is in
Italy... more |

The Kill Devil Hills |
From the outset it appears that virtually everyone who has seen
The Kill Devil Hills has recognised that there is something
special about them. Looking like a chain gang on weekend leave the
band are largely acoustic based, and from their debut gig at The
Swan Hotel in May 2003 the word spread quickly. Within months
there was a vibe that other bands try for years to cultivate. In
August 2004, barely a year after that first gig they released the
much heralded... more |

Flow Dynamics |
Flow
Dynamics in scientific terms relates to velocity and pressure
measurement, but musically it is a culmination of over a year’s
work from local musician Dave McKinney, whose new creative project
merges live musicians with electronics to create modern soul-funk.
Dave McKinney gained his reputation as the drummer and founding
member of percussive-groove band Rhibosome, who successfully
turned their studio productions into a fully fledged live set up,
touring extensively throughout WA and Australia...

Downsyde |
It is self-evident now that hip hop is not going to become the
scourge of culture as many had hoped. Conservatism has often
protested about the new and supposedly dangerous parts of music.
Mozart was protested against for his rebel tunes and so has hip
hop, metal, techno, punk and just about everything else except
Hootie and The Blowfish. It is hard for some to believe that youth
culture could see these people as positive influences on their
lives... more |

Karnivool |
When the circus rolled into town there was always one freckly kid
dreaming of running away to join the show. Intrigued, and often a
little scared by what went on behind the scenes, the carnival
often seemed a dangerous and exciting place. Carnival is a place
of mystery and intrigue; The Bearded Lady, The Acrobats, and The
Strong Man, these were beyond the scope of the normal imagination.
And behind the scenes an immense amount of work, training,
dedication and fun would accompany the rewards received...
