Highroad No. 28
First appeared - Issue #12

Andrew J Cantwell likes to be quoted. There are sixteen interviews with different webzines around the world on the Highroad No. 28 website. Born and bred in Perth Andrew the former drummer now guitar player grew up loving all things black metal and dark metal. In 1998 he moved to Sydney and formed the band with the distinctive name. The Cantwell combo would undergo several line up changes, release two EPs, ‘Obscure Madness’ and ‘Dynamic Introspection’, attracting interest from several overseas webzines and hardcore collectors.

Andrew and his cohorts first set foot on a stage on May 24th 2003 and since then it’s been . . . well tough’s not the word. EBS (Exploding Bassplayer Syndrome) has hit over the years with fifteen coming and then going. But 2005 sees a happier Mr Cantwell, with a debut album ‘Unsteady and Steady State’ to be recorded in November, a decent bass player and some more melodic lighter songs. The present line up says Cantwell, “is very stable! Very stable for once. It is without doubt the most stable it has ever been. It consists of myself, Andy Breese and Marc E, the permanent bass player. He’s an ex-Perth boy like myself. There is a palpable synergism between us three, unlike, in the past, where many many line ups were unfocused and somewhat unhinged.” Andrew cites influences such as Feeder/Pumpkins/Helmet/The Mark Of Cain, but what about good old black, death or other kinds of metal? “I still love metal,” says the ex-Dada customer and ex-wearer of long sleeved Immortal black t-shirts, “but not ‘nu-metal’, which I find is very corporate based. Linkin Park, who I detest, were a set up band just like the Spice Girls! I love Iron Maiden, Slayer, Morbid Angel, and heaps more. My bassist is a full death metal head. But I want to state that Highroad No. 28 has nothing to do with metal. We started off as a heavy rock band and are now pop-rock with still a heavy edge.” The band will tour nationally to promote ‘Unsteady and Steady State’ in early 2006. Check out the man who never surrenders.
