Alice Haines

Alice Haines is having a very good year. Starting as a teenage
performer back in 1989 with Mixed Relations, she then went on to
join the cast of Bran Nue Day for four years. A list of her other
collaborations include Coloured Stone, Paul Kelly, Kev Carmody and
Christine Anu. Alice has now taken the reins of her career firmly
into her own hands. Saturday 16th July 2005
was an important moment, when she launched her latest CD ‘Matter
Of Time’. “It was a special night for me. |

The Fly By Night was a great feeling, all the musicians clicked.
But it was also a turning point, I realise I only want to do one
off shows like this. I’ve found my niche with production now,
that’s where I’m the happiest.”
Alice has done a fine job on ‘Matter Of Time’, fusing her
indigenous rhythms and melodies into a contemporary format. The
vocals are particularly inventive such as on the David Milroy
composition ‘Let It Sing’, which is exactly what Alice does in
both execution and behind the mixing desk. There are eleven Haines
songs as well as a Jimmy Chi number from Bran Nue Dae ‘Long Way’.
“This was a very laid back country tune in the show and we’ve
beefed it up a bit.” Alice has recently moved house and
consequently moved more equipment into a larger home studio. For
the next few months
Alice
will spend all her creative energies on ‘Women’s Business’ a CD
which brings together top West Australian Aboriginal women
performers. Lorrae Coffin, Lois Olney, Naomi Pigram, Doreen Pensio,
Charmaine Bennell and Gina Williams are just some of the key
people involved. “We bring the women in one at a time usually.
Each person has their own stories. For them it’s a way to express
the issues that are facing them back in the communities. Domestic
abuse and an undermining of their identity within those
communities. I almost have to be a psychologist to get these women
to really sing it out. But it’s been very rewarding and inspiring
for me. It’s all from the heart.” Haines is documenting the whole
process right up to the launch, which should be early 2006. That
should be another good year for a woman called
Alice.
