Fighting For Alaska
First appeared - Issue #11

The words to his band’s song ‘Bent Over Backwards’ might have been ringing through drummer Rohan Fowler’s mind as he found himself stuck in Black Friday Kwinana Freeway traffic. “We bent over backwards for you” and “not all roads take you home” couldn’t have rung truer as FFA had to cancel a University of WA gig due to one burst water main that stranded thousands of Perth motorists for hours.

Still it could have been worse, they might have missed out on a gig with REM (bassist Craig Harman’s passion/obsession), or a date with five boutique beers (guitarist/vocalist Dan Brandis’ preferred poison). One set of appointments they didn’t miss, thankfully for lead vocalist and future primary school teacher Meike Scantlebury were three very enjoyable school shows in the last couple of months. “Yes we did Rockingham, Waikiki and Gooseberry Hill. It was part of a WAM program to put bands into lunchtime school concerts/music classes and there’s always a question time for the kids. It was really cool we made a lot of new friends,” remarks Meike enthusiastically. “Unfortunately we’ve got to wait until September for the next one.”

In the meantime Fighting For Alaska will have to make do with grown ups around Perth and keep themselves amused by recording their eagerly awaited follow up to ‘The Long Way Home’ EP recorded in July 2003. “We’ve been demoing in my laundry. We’re planning to record six new songs soon and hoping to get Michael Carpenter once again to come over from Melbourne to help out with production and mixing. There’s a possible tour being lined up over east in September. We’re really aching to get some new stuff out.” The first EP continues to sell well at gigs with the Husker Du-ish ‘Bent Over Backwards’ still getting some independent radio airplay. The new recording will still feature the impeccable dual vocal attack of Meike and Dan and also of course “new boy” bassist Craig Harman, who is normally a guitar player but has done a fine job filling former FFA four stringer Don Stanwix’s shoes. And as he says in his personal journal, “now that I’ve joined the band I legitimately get to drink their rider”. Getting away with it indeed!
