School of Audio Engineering
Ten Years Gone

Story By Chris Archibald
First appeared - Issue #9

The School of Audio Engineering (SAE) began the first syndicated school of its kind, sporting some memorable equipment and memorable alumni. While we hear a lot about what the school does, we have rarely heard from its graduates and how their time at SAE has been a catalyst for their own unique musical chemical reactions. The audio syllabus at SAE attracts some driven talent in all aspects of sound, with many graduates finding successful careers right on their doorstep. Two ex-students who have made their passion reality in the years since they finished their courses are Laurie McCallum, formerly of Planet Studios, and Dave Parkin, owner and founder of Blackbird Sound.

Laurie and Dave both found that the transition from study to the real world was helped not only by the confidence that was instilled in them by having a formal qualification, but also by the backup they received from the teachers once they were gone. Dave felt that the returns to the school to talk shop were always rewarding. “They cover everything from the sound of my studio to how to push the place to attract more clients.” Passing on what they have learned in the course and in practicality is also something that Dave and Laurie both find satisfying. After the tragic demise of Planet Studios, both Dave and Laurie are now operating out of the Blackbird rooms. This means that Laurie has also been helping Dave show some of the visiting SAE classes first hand industry knowledge. “We both did the last one. SAE’s good like that because they don’t keep you in the confines of SAE. They take you out and do a live set-up as well as bring you into the studios. They push you to experience the real world.”

Laurie and Dave have both found that the SAE certificate has offered them the opportunity and invaluable tools towards achieving their aims. Surrounded by his great set-up of gear, it was interesting to hear Dave lament over not having some of the equipment that he used in his time studying, an encouraging point for anyone about to embark on an SAE course. Another positive sign is that some of the most recent audio graduates are also finding work in the highly competitive Perth music scene. Recent graduate Scott Archibald, (yes, the writer’s brother but still valid- Ed) formerly of funk band FTC has been able to find work in live engineering while juggling family and work commitments. Like Dave and Laurie, Scott found that the staff at SAE are always on hand with tips or contacts. He also further emphasised that your own personal commitment will be your best tool in finding that musical niche. “You’re given the knowledge and guidance, but it’s up to you to apply that knowledge. It’s a tough industry and you need commitment and perseverance.”

SAE has always prided itself on the practical application of their audio courses. This knowledge has seen them graduate some passionate and committed students since the school’s inception in Perth. Through this drive many graduates are now actively employed in the roles they love the most.
