Rebel Recording & Rehearsal Studio
Story By Graham Greene
First appeared - Issue #8

Situated on Marmion St Booragoon, Rebel Studio is a compact, state-of-the-art recording and rehearsal complex founded in 1996 by musician and businessman Andrew Eddy. Originally designed as purely a rehearsal environment, Rebel was a neighbour to the first Guitar World store, with both businesses catering to musicians in the south-western suburbs in need of conveniently located retail and rehearsal facilities. Through a friendly, helpful and mutually beneficial personal and business relationship with Jamie Page and Rob Formentin of Guitar World, the two businesses formed a new centre for the industry in a part of town previously devoid of a musical presence.

By the time GW moved to their Myaree premises, Rebel was established in its own right as a solid musical entity in the area, offering recording services to bands and artists wanting to produce a good quality demo at a reasonable price. From his own experience in the music industry, Andrew knew what a musician’s needs were when it came to providing the right products and services. After twelve months of running the rehearsal rooms he installed a simple reel-to-reel recording set-up, allowing his customers to record rehearsals and demos without going to the expense of hiring a full blown recording studio. The idea was a good one, and while not original, was perfectly timed and placed to take advantage of an unfulfilled need in the area.

Today, Rebel Studio features three air conditioned rehearsal rooms, the largest of which doubles as the main room for a fully equipped PC-based recording studio. All rooms are fitted with Yamaha PA systems and Shure microphones, and musical instruments and equipment can be hired at the studio. Accessories such as picks, sticks, strings and leads are also available, preventing the problems of that late night broken string or drum stick. Hot and cold drinks are another thoughtful addition, in an area where there are not too many late night convenience stores nearby.

The recording studio control room now boasts Logic 5 recording software and full studio monitoring, with the option of multi track recording or live-to-DAT mixes, all in 24-bit digital. A selection of FX units, Mic preamps and compressors provide the necessary tools for a great sound, and tracks can be mixed to DAT, CD, ½ tape, Analogue 8-track and cassette. All of this means that a band need go no further than Rebel to take a song or project from writing and rehearsal through pre-production to finished recording. For solo artists and song writers, Rebel’s industry contacts mean that a variety of session musicians, engineers and producers can be called upon if needed to provide that professional touch.

Rebel Recording and Rehearsal Studio is open seven days a week at 5/502 Marmion St Booragoon, for bookings and enquiries call (08) 9330 8225 or 0414 455 157 or email rebelstudios@hotmail.com
